What is a Veterans Railcard?

A Veterans Railcard is a discount card that allows UK Veterans and Merchant Mariners to get 1/3 off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak and Advance tickets for travel throughout the National Rail network in England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as 60% off child fares. You can also link your Veterans Railcard with an Oyster Card to get 1/3 off Off-Peak travel around London.

How much is a Veterans Railcard?

A Veterans Railcard costs £30 for one year or £70 for three years. It's one of the only Railcards that can be used at Peak times, meaning you have endless savings ahead of you.

When can I use a Veterans Railcard?

A Veterans Railcard can be used at any time for Peak and Off-Peak travel. For journeys made between 04:30 and 09:59 Monday to Friday, a minimum fare of £12 is payable. This minimum fare is not applied to Advance fares, travel at weekends, on Public Holidays, or in July and August.

You won’t be able to use the Veterans Railcard for discounts on Season tickets, travel on Hull Trains, Grand Central, or Eurostar services.

Who is eligible for a Veterans Railcard?

To qualify for a Veterans Railcard, you must have served at least one day or more in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Reserve or Regular). If you’re a Merchant Mariner who has seen duty on legally defined military operations, you also qualify for the Veterans Railcard.

You’ll need to provide evidence of your eligibility when applying for a Veterans Railcard, using one of the following:

  • A military or Veterans identification card or certificate
  • A notification or letter regarding a claim for injury under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
  • Proof of an award under Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
  • A notification or letter regarding a claim for injury under the War Pension Scheme
  • Proof of receiving an ongoing award under the War Pension Scheme
  • Proof of receiving an Armed Forces Pension
  • Proof of having served as a Merchant Mariner and seen duty on legally defined military operations
