Newcastle Airport is an international transportation hub for passengers travelling from the far North of England. The airport is just under 6 miles northwest of the city centre. With Newcastle upon Tyne’s excellent train links, many would rather take the train than drive as it saves them money and time. Direct trains run to Newcastle Central from Glasgow, York, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. This makes it easy to get to the airport by train from the major towns and cities of mainland Britain.

The accessible Tyne and Wear Metro makes it easy to get from central Newcastle to Newcastle Airport. It runs directly from Newcastle Central train station to Newcastle Airport terminal in only 25 minutes.

Getting to Newcastle Airport by train

Trainline makes it easy to book cheap train tickets to Newcastle Central train station. This will save you time and money on taxis and airport parking, meaning more cash to spend on your holiday. We recommend you book well in advance of travelling to get the cheapest fares. National Railcards can also save you an extra 1/3 off an adult’s journey and 60% off a kid’s one.

Airport terminal by train. Virgin Trains East Coast services run from Edinburgh and London Kings Cross. CrossCountry trains run from Glasgow, York, Leeds and Sheffield. And TransPennine Express services run from Manchester and Liverpool. This allows easy access to Newcastle Central station via train from anywhere in the UK.

From Newcastle Central station, you can take the Tyne and Wear Metro directly to the airport. The entrance to the Metro station is inside the train station. From there, the green line will take you directly to Newcastle Airport terminal. Metro tickets cost £3.40 for a single, although you can buy a Pop Pay as You Go travel card to get further reductions. Metros run from around 6am to midnight 7 days a week. They depart every 12-15 minutes except on Sundays before 10.am. where they depart every 30 minutes..

For those who have an early flight the next day, there are two hotels, a Doubletree by Hilton and a Premier Inn, just next to the Metro station. They are both within 10 minutes’ walk of Newcastle Airport terminal.

With over 4.8 million passengers each year, Newcastle Airport is one of the busiest in the UK. It therefore has plenty of eateries and shops to help you relax before your flight. The check-in gates are on the ground floor of Newcastle Airport terminal, on the other side of the hall as the entrances. Once you’ve checked in, follow the escalators upstairs to get to the security gates.

You’ll find a duty-free store after security with a selection of confectionary, alcohol, souvenirs and other products. After that, you’ll find the shops, coffee shops, bars and eateries on the same floor. For eating, you’ll find a Burger King, Caffè Ritazza, Greggs, Upper Crust and other bars, restaurants and coffee shops. There’s also plenty for shoppers, including Boots, Dixons Travel, JD Sports and WHSmith.
