Take the train from Pompeii to Rome and you’ll be right into the heart of the Eternal City without having to worry about traffic or parking. The average journey time by train between Pompeii and Rome is 2 hours and 23 minutes, with around 29 trains per day. As there’s usually no direct train from Pompeii to Rome, you can take one of Trenitalia’s regional trains from Pompeii to Naples and then a high-speed train from Naples to Rome. Frecciarossa and Italo trains can reach speeds of up to 186 mph (300 km/h), meaning the fastest journeys between Pompeii and Rome can take less than two hours.

Trenitalia is the national railway company of Italy, with a fleet including high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca), Intercity and Intercity night trains and regional trains. If you’re travelling for work, Frecciarossa Business is the ideal option for you – it offers more legroom, glass dividers for more privacy, EasyBistrò meal service and a private 4-seat compartment called Salottino. Most of the train companies across Europe release their tickets around three to six months in advance, many of which can be cheaper the earlier you book. If you know the dates you want to travel, you may be able to find some cheaper train tickets from Pompei to Rome by booking early.§
Many of the train services in Europe are also popular commuter services, lots of train companies increase ticket prices during “peak hours” (generally between 06:00 – 10:00 and 15:00 – 19:00 on weekdays). If you can, consider travelling outside of peak hours to find lower priced tickets.
On some of the busier routes, you might also have the option to take a slower or connecting train. It may take a little longer than some high-speed or direct services, but if you have a little extra time on your hands, you might find a cheaper fare. Plus, you'll have more time to enjoy the view of the countryside!

Starting August 6, 2023, there will be a direct train from Pompei to Rome every Sunday evening. This train leaves Pompei at 6:40pm and arrives in Rome at 8:55pm, before carrying on to Florence where it arrives at 10:58pm. This service will be a high-speed service run by Trenitalia, so you’ll be traveling on a Frecciarossa train.
There will also be a direct train from Rome to Pompei on every Sunday morning. It will leave Roma Termini at 8:53am and arrive in Pompei at 10:40am.
