Travelling from Pompei to Naples on the Campania Express – June 2023

My family and I had been visiting Pompeii as part of a trip to Naples, after spending the morning wandering around the Archaeological Park, it was time to head back to Naples for a late lunch. We had booked return tickets for the Campania Express (also known as the tourist train) which was quicker (although a bit more expensive) than the usual Circumvesuviana or Trenitalia services.

Getting to Pompei Scavi station

It was just a 5-minute walk from the park to the station, and we had a bit of time before our booked train, so we got some drinks from one of the restaurants nearby. Pompei station is quite small with just two platforms. On the platform we were waiting on, there were no screens to give updates on train times, so we were a bit worried we may have missed our train, but it was just delayed (around 20 minutes) in the end.

Pompei Scavi train station

We had our tickets checked by inspectors before we could board the train, as with our Campania Express tickets we had to book for a specific time.

On board the train

Our tickets included seat reservations, so we walked down the train to find them. We had a group of four and then two seats nearby, so we weren’t far away from each other. The seats were plastic but still comfortable and a big bonus of this train was the air-conditioning which we were all very grateful for as it was 34 degrees that day!

Arriving at Napoli Garibaldi station

Inside Naples train station

We only stopped once on the way back to Naples, and once the train arrived into the station, it was easy to find our way off the platform and get to the metro, which we took to head back to our hotel before heading out for some food.
