The best way to get to Southampton from Manchester is by passing through Birmingham and Reading via a direct train.
On this route, you'll first pass the industrial towns and cities of Stockport, Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent, before making your way into the Midlands and stopping at Birmingham New Street. As you continue the journey, you'll cross through the home counties and the university city of Oxford, before continuing south and eventually reaching Southampton.
