Taking a Thameslink train from London to Luton Airport Parkway

I was heading straight from work to Luton Airport to catch a flight to Barcelona, so I bought my ticket in advance to save time. It was available as a digital ticket which meant I didn't have to stop at a ticket machine either. If you buy a ticket to Luton Airport rather than Luton Airport Parkway, this includes travel on the new Luton DART shuttle which runs between the train station and the airport.

I jumped on the Thameslink at Farringdon (there are plenty of Thameslink stations throughout London you can choose from) and there were plenty of seats to choose from as you can walk the entire length of the train with ease. I didn’t have a suitcase with me, but there were luggage racks throughout the train and lots of space to have your bags near you if you need them. The train took just over 30 minutes to reach the airport and there were 3 stops along the way, so the journey felt quite quick – definitely easier than driving there!

Once the train arrived at Luton Airport Parkway station, I headed up the escalators and followed the walkway round to the right, through ticket barriers to officially leave the station and enter the very modern and spacious Luton DART terminal. There was one more set of ticket barriers that let me through to the area where the DART shuttles depart.

Luton DART terminal

There were two platforms opposite each other surrounded by glass doors, which stayed closed until the shuttle arrived. Once I stepped onboard, the shuttle was wide enough for lots of passengers to stand with luggage and several seats running along each side and at each end (sit at the front if you want to pretend you’re driving!). There were also screens displaying upcoming departures so I could check the status of my flight, plus dedicated wheelchair space and priority seating for those who need it.

Inside a Luton DART shuttle

The shuttle journey took about 4 minutes in total and dropped me off right by the entrance to the airport – very convenient!
