Fancy going on a day trip from Venice? Take the train from Venice to Varenna and you can reach your destination in less than four hours on the fastest services.
There are more than 15 trains a day connecting Venice to Varenna-Esino, requiring a quick change in Milan. One of the preferred services is the Frecciarossa train, which darts through the Italian countryside at speeds of up to 300 km/h. If you’re travelling with family, there’s far more space for luggage than a car boot too.
Upon arrival, the town of Varenna is easily accessible from the well-located station. Head towards Lake Como and have a stroll down the narrow streets branching off from Piazza San Giorgio, Varenna’s main square. Make sure you also visit Villa Monastero, with its beautiful garden that collects many rare plant species – just remember it’s open to the public from March to November only.
