About Ashby de la Zouch Castle

Surrounded by trees and set in impressive grounds, Ashby de la Zouch Castle is a majestic place for a picnic and a wander through history. An audio tour is the best way to take the castle in, allowing you to learn about the former inhabitants, such as Edward IV, as you make your way around the striking ruins.

One of the first items on your itinerary should be to climb the castle's keep-like Hastings Tower. The tower, though heavily damaged in the Civil War, is still largely intact and great for scrambling up to amazing views at the top. If heights aren't your thing then make your way underground, into the sprawling passage that runs under the castle, from the former kitchen all the way to the great tower.

Although there's no cafe at the castle, when you've worked up an appetite, weather permitting, watch the world go by at one of the castle's idyllic picnic spots, where you can lay out a blanket and enjoy a sandwich on what were once grand sunken gardens in front of the castle - you'll struggle to find a nicer view to enjoy over lunch.
