Edinburgh Waverley Station is located on Princes Street in central Edinburgh. Waverley Station sits in the bed of a former loch which once separated Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns and was drained as part of the city’s redevelopment. In its place, three train stations were built. The site was named ‘Waverley’ after Scottish writer, Sir Walter Scott’s first novel. In 1868, the existing buildings were demolished and construction began on today’s Victorian structure. The current station covers 25 acres and is the second-largest station in the UK.
Edinburgh Waverley station is the main terminus for LNER in the north, although there are a select few that continue on into other parts of Scotland. Other train companies that operate out of Edinburgh Waverley are ScotRail, including trains to Glasgow Queen Street, Caledonian Sleeper trains from London Euston, Avanti West Coast on their west coast line, one CrossCountry train service, as well as a Transpennine Express route too. The amount of services and trains that run through Edinburgh on a daily basis means passengers can reach as far south as Exeter St David's in a day, or London, Inverness or Manchester.
