Schiphol to Amsterdam by train

Review by Luke McDonough

Like most who visit Amsterdam somewhat spontaneously, my journey to the Dutch capital began at Schiphol Airport (although you could mistake the place for one gigantic shopping mall – brilliant if that’s what you’re into). Luckily, it was really easy to find the train station itself as it was well signposted throughout.

Once at the station, you can either print your tickets off or use a Mobile Ticket, though I decided to go with both just to cover all bases. I ended up using the paper tickets to tap in and out (there are no barriers at Schiphol, but there are at Amsterdam Centraal). On the station screens the info was in Dutch, but the place names aren’t spelt very differently so it’s easy to figure out where you’re going.

Trains to the city are fairly regular, with waiting times of less than 10 minutes, and a speedy journey of only 15-20 minutes. Onboard, there’s plenty of room for both baggage and long legs – I was able to stretch out after a cramped flight – a welcome relief). The train met all my expectations as a modern traveller, with toilets, WiFi and bicycle spaces available. Some announcements are made in English while onboard, though primarily in Dutch.

Before I knew it, the ride was over and I was at Amsterdam Centraal station, which is placed in an excellent location in the centre of the city. I crossed one bridge on foot and was immediately into the vibrant De Wallen area, where most tourists start off their adventure.

Overall, an incredibly quick and efficient journey. The train is without a doubt the best way to get to Amsterdam from Schiphol Airport.
