Known as the flagship of Trenitalia’s high-speed Frecce services, Frecciarossa trains serve 189 stations across Italy including frequent connections between major destinations like Rome, Florence, Milan and Venice. Meaning 'red arrow' in English, Frecciarossa trains reach speeds of 300 km/h (around 186 mph) thanks to some very clever engineering. Combine this with their comfortable ultramodern design, and you’re all set to be whisked around Italy in style.

Executive

Features Reclining leather seats 74 cm wide, one metre and a half apart from each other and equipped with extendable leg rests. All chairs can rotate by 180 degrees so that you can always travel in the direction of the train. Only 10 seats per carriage. Access to a meeting room with 6 seats, power sockets and a 32-inch monitor connected to a computer.
Services onboard High-quality restaurant service with gourmet meals, Illy coffee and orange juice. Gourmet meals are inspired by regional traditions and prepared with high-quality ingredients with a signature recipe for lunch and dinner signed by chef Carlo Cracco. Free newspapers and magazines.

Frecciarossa train types

Frecciarossa trains are designed by the Italian company Ansaldo Breda and there are two types: Frecciarossa 1000 and Frecciarossa ETR 500.

Frecciarossa 1000

First introduced in 2015, Frecciarossa 1000 trains are the newest addition to the ‘Frecce’ family. These modern trains can travel on all high-speed tracks in Italy and Europe and are well-known for their use of cutting-edge ecological technology.

Frecciarossa 1000 carriages are usually divided into the following classes:

Frecciarossa 500

As Trenitalia’s original high-speed service, Frecciarossa 500 trains have been whizzing people around Italy since 1993. Designed to combine quick travel times with maximum comfort, they helped change the way people travel – offering shorter journey times than flying between certain destinations.

Frecciarossa tickets

Trenitalia offers three ticket types for Frecciarossa trains: Super Economy, Economy and Base.

Base This ticket offers your maximum flexibility. Before departure, you can change the ticket for free and an unlimited amount of times.
Economy Perfect for those who want to save but still be flexible. Before departure, you can change your ticket date or time once by paying the difference compared to the base price.
Super Economy This ticket is all about maximum savings. Buy these tickets in advance to find the best prices, however no changes or refunds are permitted once they’re booked.

 

Prices vary depending on your selected class (either Standard, Premium, Business or Executive), the use of a discount or loyalty card, the number of seats already sold/still available and how close to the departure date you’re booking.

How to buy Frecciarossa tickets at the best price

There are several ways you can find Frecciarossa tickets at the best price and save money. Whether it's a business or leisure trip, our Journey planner can help you find the best available tickets for the days you want to travel.

To find the right tickets for Frecciarossa trains on our website or app you can:

  • Select the 'cheapest' option when searching for your ticket – this is usually the lowest available price for the selected route
  • Add any valid discount or loyalty card (Carta Verde, Carta Argento or CartaFRECCIA) to your passenger profile on your Trainline account, so you’ll immediately see discounted prices. 
  • Book in advance – Frecciarossa tickets are available up to 6 months in advance, so the earlier you book, the cheaper your train ticket will be.

CartaFRECCIA

CartaFRECCIA is Trenitalia's loyalty card and allows you to accumulate points and buy tickets for Frecciarossa trains at discounted prices. Every euro spent travelling on the Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains is equivalent to 1 CartaFRECCIA point.

CartaFRECCIA Special -50%

To travel on Frecciarossa on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 14:00 with a 50% discount on the price of the Base ticket.

CartaFRECCIA Young

Discounts between 30% and 50% on the Base price for young people under 30 years old.

CartaFRECCIA Senior

Discounts between 30% and 50% on the Base price for seniors over 60 years old.

FrecciaLink

The train + bus service called FrecciaLink allows you to start the journey by train and continue by bus to destinations not reached by high-speed train.

A handy train + bus service, FrecciaLink allows you to start your journey by Frecce, Trenitalia's high-speed trains, and continue by bus to destinations not reached by high-speed trains.

If the Freccialink service is available for your route, it’ll be displayed directly in the search results on our website or app. FrecciaLink bus tickets also allow free and unlimited changes before your scheduled departure.

The FrecciaLink service reaches the following destinations:

  • Siena and Perugia from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station
  • Matera from Salerno and Potenza stations
  • Cremona from Brescia station
  • Catanzaro from Lamezia Terme station

In winter (usually from mid-December to 31st March), a FrecciaLink service is available to reach the mountain resorts, in particular:

  • Ortisei, S. Cristina, Selva di Val Gardena from Bolzano in connection with the Frecce to / from Bologna, Florence and Rome
  • Canazei, Moena, Vigo di Fassa and Ora Auer from Bolzano in connection with the Frecce to / from Bologna, Florence and Rome
  • Cortina D'Ampezzo from Venice in connection with the Frecce to / from Bologna, Florence, Rome, Brescia, Milan and Turin
  • Courmayeur from Turin in connection with the Frecce to / from Rome, Florence, Bologna and Milan
  • Madonna Di Campiglio from Trento and Verona in connection with the Frecce to / from Rome, Florence, Bologna (to Trento), Milan and Brescia (to Verona)

The FRECCE portal

The FRECCE portal is an online portal available on all Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains through which you can connect to free WiFi and take advantage of entertainment services such as movies, TV programmes, music, news and travel information.

All the services of the FRECCE portal are free, but the first time you use the portal you need to register with your credentials.

The portal can be accessed via PC, Mac, Tablet and Smartphone. It's also available in the app version, which can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. The portal is compatible with the main browsers such as Chrome, Mozilla, Explorer and Safari.

Onboard WiFi

The WiFi service on Frecciarossa trains is free and provided by TIM via the 3G / 4G network. To access, select 'WIFI Frecciarossa' or 'WIFI Frecciargento' depending on the train you're travelling on and launch the internet browser to view the portal homepage. If you don't see the homepage, you can enter the following address in the URL bar of the browser: www.portalefrecce.it

Entertainment on the FRECCE portal

The onboard entertainment offer includes:

  • Cinema: Movies and TV programmes
  • Digital newsstand: national newspapers (including Corriere, la Gazzetta, la Repubblica and mainstream press) and magazines (including Focus, Panorama, Ciak, TV Sorrisi e Canzoni and Gente)
  • Music: playlists of Italian and international music
  • News: videos and articles about the news of the day
  • Travel information: information on train times, cruise speed, connections and weather.

Further information

Children aged 0 to 4 with no reserved seat travel for free on all Frecciarossa trains. If they have assigned seats, they're entitled to half-price Base tickets. Children aged 4 to 15 are also entitled to the same 50% discount.

Small dogs, cats and other small pets are allowed on all Trenitalia trains as long as they are kept in special containers (with dimensions max 70 cm x 30 cm x 50 cm).

Dogs of a larger size are allowed on the Frecciarossa (with the exception of the hours from 07:00 to 09:00 Monday to Friday) only if kept on a leash and with a muzzle. Larger dogs will also require a ticket which is reduced by 50%. Assistance dogs are admitted for free on all Trenitalia trains.

Free WiFi is available on all Frecciarossa trains. To connect, simply select the network 'WIFI Frecciarossa' and launch your Internet browser.

Folding bikes are allowed on any Trenitalia train as long as they are stored in the special spaces reserved for baggage.

Traditional bikes, on the other hand, are allowed on all Trenitalia trains provided they are disassembled and placed in special bags (max dimensions are 80 cm x 110 cm x 40 cm).

The FrecciaBistrò restaurant service is available on all Frecce trains and offers snacks and drinks as well as a breakfast and lunch menu. Frecciarossa trains also offer a restaurant service onboard and the Freccirossa 1000 Rome to Milan trains offers a service called Easy Gourmet with an excellent menu.

Luggage is free to bring on all Trenitalia trains with wide and dedicated spaces on Frecciarossa trains.
