Operating since 1973 as a heritage railway, the line initially opened in 1836 to transport passengers and goods from Whitby through the moors. In those days the carriages were pulled by horses until the line was transformed into a steam-powered railway a decade later in 1845.

It's not just Harry Potter the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has starred in over the years, the line has been featured in lots of award-winning films like Phantom Thread which stars Daniel Day-Lewis. The NYMR even has its very own document 'The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard', which was watched by more than 3.5 million when it first aired in 2018.
