An important stop for trains between London and the south coast, Winchester station is every inch the traditional Victorian railway building, with a crisp white facade, a smart canopy and a prominent black and white clock over its main entrance. The station has been welcoming visitors to the city since 1839 and was renovated in 2004, adding a second ticket office. More recent upgrades include a new footbridge incorporating lifts, and an extension of the car park.
Trains to Winchester take just an hour from London Waterloo, and within a 10-minute walk, visitors can be in the historic heart of the city. Attractions include the huge Gothic cathedral, the 15th-century market cross and the Victorian Guildhall, plus a wealth of independent shops and restaurants. For those keen to explore the natural beauty of the area, the station is only around two miles from the western edge of the South Downs National Park.
