Cosford railway station lies just ten miles or so north-west of Wolverhampton on the London to Birkenhead line. It was opened just before WWII when an RAF base was constructed nearby. Its original name was Cosford Aerodrome Halt, but this was later shortened. Interestingly, unlike other stations along the line, Cosford’s station was built entirely of timber, though these were replaced during the 2011-12 Network Rail renovation.
Today, the station and the trains that pass through are operated by West Midlands Railway as well as Transport for Wales. The station’s two platforms are used for an hourly direct service to Wolverhampton taking 18 minutes, Shrewsbury in 33 minutes, and Birmingham New Street in 37 minutes.
If you’re visiting Cosford, it would be unthinkable not to visit the nearby Royal Air Force Museum which houses an impressive display of decommissioned planes in wartime hangers and chronicles the history of the force through state-of-the-art exhibits. If you want to have a picnic or simply relax, head to David Austin Roses, a lovely spot with rose gardens and a garden centre attached that is only a 23-minute walk away.
