Bournemouth station is located on Holdenhurst Road near St Paul’s roundabout. At the request of council authorities in the 1800s, the station was built outside of the main town centre but it is still easily accessible via a 15-minute bus journey from the town centre and seafront. Bournemouth station is served by South West Trains, which runs fast trains from Bournemouth to London Waterloo, and CrossCountry, which heads north to Manchester.
Bournemouth station was opened under the name of Bournemouth East in 1885, replacing the old station on the opposite side of Holdenhurst Road. In 1899, it was renamed Bournemouth Central. It was then renamed again in 1967 when it became simply Bournemouth station. The roof was damaged in the storm of 1987 and in 2000, the building underwent extensive renovation work. Platforms three and four are joined together and form one of the longest platforms in the country.
