The Discovery Museum is a free-entry science and local history museum, perfect for a day out with the kids. The fascinating exhibitions chart Newcastle's journey from Roman times to the present day and showcase the city's technological and maritime importance.

The museum is located smack-bang in Newcastle's city centre, just a 5-minute walk from Newcastle train station. As you exit the station, head west on Neville Street - the same direction as the one-way traffic. You'll see the Life Science Centre on your left, eventually reaching a crossroads slightly further on. Just beyond the crossroads, you'll find the Discovery Museum; its redbrick facade is unmistakable!

Newcastle station is a major hub for the North East, served by Northern, LNER, TransPennine Express and CrossCountry trains. With regular arrivals from London, Liverpool, Leeds and Edinburgh, it's super-easy to travel by train to Newcastle.

This attraction has free entry for all.

More about the Discovery Museum

As you enter the building, you'll be greeted by the Turbinia - the world's first steam turbine-powered steamship. Built over a century ago and measuring 32 metres, it's an icon of maritime history. Head up to the Turbinia Cafe on the second floor to get a bird's eye view of the ship while enjoying a cup of tea.

Each floor is home to unique exhibitions, exploring the history of Tyneside and its inhabitants. Explore the Destination Tyneside exhibition on the second floor, telling the stories of those who migrated to Tyneside, and wander through the Science Maze to find the museum's steam engines. There is an under-sevens play area on the first floor and the PLAY + INVENT space, which holds events which get families working together creatively!
