Originally opened in 1834, Woking train station found fame in H. G. Wells’ classic sci-fi tale The War of the Worlds, which saw it destroyed by Martian invaders. Luckily, the tripods are nowhere to be seen today, except in the form of a sculpture on nearby Horsell Common, their landing spot in the novel.
The modern station has a curved art deco facade at its south entrance and is a busy stop on the line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth. Popular events in Woking include Chinese New Year – the town has a large, active Chinese community – the Woking Canal Festival and the regular Woking 20th Century & Art Deco Fair.
The station has a prime spot in the heart of the town centre, right next to Woking Shopping Centre and a short walk from The Lightbox, a gallery and museum on the banks of the Basingstoke Canal.
Woking train station is mainly served by South Western Railway trains, which connect London Waterloo to Woking in 49m, Haslemere to Woking in 32m and Portsmouth to Woking in 1h 28m.
