Each June the All England Lawn Tennis Championships, colloquially known as Wimbledon, brings tennis fans from all over the world to a suburb of southwest London. But while Wimbledon’s name is synonymous with the tournament (actually held closer to Southfields, two stops up on the District Line), there’s much more to this busy commuter town. The town centre is right outside the station, offering shows at the Edwardian New Wimbledon Theatre as well as a wide range of shops. Just up the hill to the west is chic Wimbledon Village and the pleasant open spaces of Wimbledon Common. The busiest and most regular trains from Wimbledon are the fast commuter services to London Waterloo, but the station also acts as a terminus for the District Line and local tram services, as well as connecting to destinations in southeast and southwest London.
