Weymouth station was opened in 1857 as part of the Great Western Railway and featured a glazed roof across the platforms – though that striking feature was removed during WWII. The following forty years brought many further changes made to the station, and the current buildings were opened in 1986 as part of an extensive refurbishment to deal with increased holiday traffic.
As well as being a tourist attraction in its own right, the town is a hub for ferries to the Channel Islands. The station exit opens out onto a small square alongside King Street. From here it's a short two-block walk east to the beach and The Esplanade, with its collection of hotels, guesthouses, bars and restaurants. Five minutes in the other direction along King Street will take you to the RSPB Discovery Centre. Weymouth is also the nearest station to Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park, where you can learn all about the Marina world. The main shopping streets are to the south of the station, and lead down to the historic harbour and ferry port.
