Trains to Rufford

Rufford railway station serves the little community of Rufford a few miles south of Preston. It was opened in the mid-19^th century by the then Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway, though it was quickly incorporated into the East Lancashire Railway and then later the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Unfortunately, during the early ‘70s, the original station buildings were demolished and replaced with more functional concrete structures. There is no ticket office or self-service machines, so tickets will need to be bought online in advance or on board the train with the guard. Today, the two platforms and the trains that pass through are managed by Northern. There are several northbound services a day direct to Preston in 37 minutes and southbound to Ormskirk in 12 minutes, though there are no services on Sunday.

When you disembark at Rufford, you’ll find several things that are worth a visit. Down at the Saint Mary's Marina, you could charter on of the local barges for a day on the canals. Alternatively, admire the old St Mary the Virgin church or amble around the National Trust Rufford Old Hall which was once visited by a young Shakespeare.
