Portsmouth Arms train station is located on the Tarka Line, 28 miles north of Exeter. The station serves the surrounding villages of Burrington, High Bickington and Northcote Manor. Opened in 1854, the station is named after the nearby pub which itself was named after the Earl of Portsmouth. The 4th Earl represented Devonshire North in Parliament in the 17th Century and was Lord of the nearby Northcote Manor.
Today, train services at Portsmouth Arms train station are provided by Great Western Railway; there are two services in each direction per day. The station is an unstaffed request stop so passengers wishing to alight here must tell the conductor on the train and passengers who need to board the train must signal clearly to the driver of the approaching train. The journey time to Barnstaple and Exeter St Davids is 19 minutes and 51 minutes respectively. The single platform can be accessed via a shallow ramp, though there is no wheelchair access to the trains. There is no ticket office or ticket machines at this station and so passengers are advised to purchase their tickets in advance or from the conductor on the train.
