Cooling towers may not be to everyone's taste, but it's hard to deny the impact of the eight huge ones that loom over East Midlands Parkway's platforms. They're part of Ratcliffe Power Station, and while they're hard to miss, they're not the main reason passengers come to this otherwise remote stop. East Midlands Parkway provides access to the Midland Main Line for commuters in local villages, providing them with fast services to Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, as well as down to London St Pancras - the journey to the capital takes about 90 minutes. East Midlands Parkway is also the nearest station to East Midlands Airport, a hub for several low-cost and regional airlines. It serves around four million passengers a year, offering mostly domestic and short-haul flights. Just west of the airport is the area's other main attraction: the Donington Park racetrack, a hugely popular motorsport circuit that also hosts major music events.
With flights to many European destinations, including the Canary Islands, East Midlands Airport has become a popular choice for travellers from both Britain’s East Midlands and further afield. Many travellers choose to take the train there, to save on both money and time.
