Chester Station is to the east of the Phoenix Tower and Chester Cathedral, just outside the city walls. Originally a joint station sharing tracks and facilities with a number of train operating companies, Chester Station has an ornate Italianate frontage and high in the roof beams there are carved wooden owls placed so as to deter wild pigeons.
The Shropshire Union Canal, which passes through some isolated and rural countryside, also runs through Newtown near the station. Nearby Brook Street is a popular shopping area with restaurants, pubs and a post office. About five minutes away on foot is the charming Little Theatre on Brook Street, while a ten-minute walk towards the south of Newtown from the station leads to Grosvenor Park, where the Chester Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre presents a series of open-air productions every summer.
