The original train station, opened in 1871, was Bolton Trinity Street. It was all but demolished in the 1980s, although the iconic Victorian clock tower – a landmark in the town for over a century – was dismantled and rebuilt next to the modern-day Bolton station.

Located in the centre of town, easing transport links to and from the town centre, Bolton train station has been pivotal in increasing the tourism industry of Bolton. People travel to Bolton drawn by its status as a hive of cultural activity; the Octagon Theatre and Bolton Museum and Art Gallery offer visitors intellectual escapism. The latter also houses many artefacts of the town’s textile industry, paying homage to Bolton’s cotton-spinning past and the 14th-century Flemish settlers that introduced the tradition of weaving to the locals.
