Aylesbury station has been serving this bustling market town in central Buckinghamshire since 1863. Located less than half a mile to the south east of the centre, the station is just a 10-minute stroll, via Friars Square Shopping Centre, from the historic cobbled market square, which still hosts open-air markets four days a week. A little further on, around Kingsbury, Buckingham Street and Cambridge Street, are plenty of independent shops plus a wide choice of bars, restaurants and cafés.
The current station buildings date back to 1926, with some additions and refurbishment from the 1980s. Alongside main-line services, for a period between 1948 and 1961, Aylesbury was the terminus of the London Underground’s Metropolitan line, with services changing from electric to steam locomotives at Rickmansworth. Nowadays it’s an important commuter station, with up to five trains per hour at peak times to and from London Marylebone.
