Since Newcastle Airport terminal has excellent transport links to the North of England, the train can save you money and time. Newcastle Airport is just under 6 miles northwest of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre. It’s easy to get from there to Newcastle.
In fact, the convenient Tyne and Wear metro runs directly from Newcastle Airport to Newcastle Central station in just half-an-hour. From Newcastle Central station, you can then take direct trains to Glasgow, York, Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester. This puts the major towns and cities of mainland Britain within easy reach.

Travelling from Newcastle Airport
With Trainline, you can book cheap train tickets from Newcastle Central station to anywhere within the mainland UK. This will save you time and money on taxis and airport parking, which is great if you’re a little short of cash after your holiday. Trainline recommends you book well in advance of your journey for the lowest fares. National Railcards can save you 1/3 off adult fares and 60% off fares for kids.
You can take the convenient Tyne and Wear Metro from Newcastle Airport to Newcastle Central train station in Newcastle city centre. This Metro runs 7 days a week, day and night, and from around 6 a.m. to midnight every day. It departs every 12-15 minutes, except on Sundays before 9 a.m. where it departs every 30 minutes. The journey takes around 25 minutes and leaves from in front of Newcastle Airport terminal.
Metro tickets cost £3.40 for a single. However, you can also buy a Pop Pay as You Go travel card to get further reductions. From Newcastle Central station, the rest of the UK is within easy reach. LNER services run to Edinburgh and London Kings Cross. CrossCountry trains run to Glasgow, York, Leeds, and Sheffield. And TransPennine Express services run to Manchester and Liverpool.
If your flight is arriving late or you have an early train the next morning, there are two hotels nearby: a Doubletree by Hilton and a Premier Inn. They are both within 10 minutes’ walk of Newcastle Airport terminal and just next to the Metro station.

Things to do in Newcastle
Newcastle Central station is right in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre. Just southeast, around 10 minutes’ walk from the station, runs the River Tyne. Seven bridges cross the Tyne, including the modern Tyne and Gateshead Millennium Bridges and the High-Level Bridge designed by Robert Louis Stevenson.
YOn the way to the river from the train station, you will pass Newcastle Castle from which Newcastle gets its name. This is a Norman fort built by William the Conqueror’s son, who also built the adjacent structure known as Black Gate. A little further north of this is the Cathedral Church of St Nicolas. This is an 11th century Church of England cathedral of Perpendicular style, originally founded in 1091.
Newcastle is famous for its nightlife and a great place to experience it is Bigg Market, where people have met since the middle ages and now houses a selection of pubs. Quayside is another popular meeting spot with plenty of bars and restaurants. The sites of Newcastle upon Tyne are accessible via the Tyne and Wear Metro.
