Birmingham to London in under an hour and a half

I travelled on an Avanti West Coast service from Birmingham New Street to London Euston. Birmingham New Street is very well connected to other stations in the Midlands and beyond; if you’re travelling from the West Midlands to London, it’s very likely you will pass through New Street on the way!

I had an e-ticket so there was no need to queue up to buy my ticket, I simply noted what platform my train was leaving from on the big departures board in the centre of the station and headed for my train.

Boarding the train

I’d booked a window seat, so I made my way to my carriage and found my seat. At busy times there is occasionally a queue at the entrance of the platform where station staff check tickets and railcards, but in my case, it was a smooth boarding process.

What’s on board?

I was sat in Standard Class, which suited me down to the ground. Seats are arranged in a 2+2 formation, with a mix of forward and backwards-facing seats (I always opt for forward!). The free onboard WiFi was serviceable – cutting out in places but otherwise reliable. Streaming services are blocked on the WiFi but Avanti West Coast does offer their own free onboard streaming portal, "Avanti Media". You’ll have to download the Avanti Media App to use it.

The journey

Truth be told, there are certainly more scenic journeys out there than Birmingham to London! However, it was certainly speedy, getting me to London Euston in just an hour and a half. Upon arrival, I made my way to the underground station (located next to Euston) and hopped on a tube back home!
