Belsay Hall’s nearest station is Morpeth, just ten miles to the east of the Grecian-cum-medieval castle and gardens. The station sees regular intercity arrivals from across the country on Virgin Trains East Coast, and local trains from Newcastle and MetroCentral on every day but Sunday. There is no direct bus service from the station to the site, so the best option is a 25-minute taxi ride, which can be arranged from directly outside Morpeth station.

About Belsay Hall

The first thing that strikes you as you arrive at Jacobean Belsay Hall are its Grade I listed heritage gardens. Make your way through the beautiful shrubs and flowers and step into another world in the unique Quarry Garden with its array of rare, exotic plants.

For the less green-fingered out there, the Grand Grecian Hall is the place to be. Feast your eyes on the amazing architecture of Belsey’s Greek-revival mansion, before making your way to the two-storey pillar hall in the centre of the house, with its iconic closely spaced columns.

Next up, investigate the original features of the family bedrooms, upstairs, as well as the stunning views from the magnolia terrace. Recharge your batteries in the Victorian kitchens, now the tearooms, and tuck into the tempting display of homemade cakes, soups and sandwiches in the picturesque surroundings of the Belsay Hall Rooms.

Last and by absolutely no means least, get on over to the medieval castle ruins and the original structure, the 14th-century defensive pele tower. The Anglo-Scottish castle still displays rare traces of elaborate medieval wall art, alongside a more contemporary manor house-style wing which was added years later, in the 19th century.
