Trains to Stone (Staffs)

Considered a particularly fine example of early station architecture, Stone train station's 1848 Grade II listed building is both grand and beautiful. Besides its notable architecture Stone offers a multitude of easy-reach destinations located as it is on the Crewe to London route of the West Midlands trains’ network. All of the services run hourly in each direction. The ancient market town of Stone – once an important stagecoach stop – runs alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal and has a wealth of facilities within a short stroll from the station. Shops, cafes and tearooms are plentiful while its pubs include the real ale award-winning Swan Inn, the canal-side Star Inn and the Red Lion which is a hostelry dating from Stone's stagecoach era. Around Stone there are also many attractions which include the Wedgewood Museum and the stunning Italian-style Trentham Gardens which have featured in The Telegraph and on BBC's Countryfile programme. The Trentham Garden Centre's massive shopping village made up of pretty timber lodges is definitely worth a look too for those who enjoy independent shops.

Further afield but still right on the doorstep – just a 10 minute journey from Stone train station – is Stafford. Another ancient town, Stafford is home to Stafford Castle, the vintage steam Amerton Railway and several stately homes. One of these is Ancient High House, a majestic timber house dating from Elizabethan Tudor times and the largest of its kind in the country. For lovers of fine porcelain Stoke-on-Trent with its several pottery visitor centres can be reached in 7 minutes by train from Stone station. Other destinations by train include Crewe – 33 minutes – and London Euston which takes 2 hours 14 minutes.
