St Helens Central railway station lies in the town of the same name a few miles east of Liverpool in Merseyside. It was opened in the late-19th century by the St Helens Canal and Railway replacing two different earlier stations in town. In the early ‘60s, the station was rebuilt by architect William Headley with the use of Pilkington Glass and then in 2007 was reconstructed yet again, making it one of the most unique railway stations in the county. Today, the two-platform station and the trains that pass on the Liverpool to Wigan Line are managed by Northern and serves more than a million passengers every year. There is a ticket office and facilities like waiting shelters, digital passenger information displays and an adjoining car park. There are three direct departures an hour to Liverpool Lime Street in 31 minutes and Wigan North Western in 18 minutes.

You’ll be spoiled for choice when you step off the train at St Helens. Big hitters include the North West Museum of Road Transport which has an impressive collection of vintage vehicles and the St Helens Theatre Royal which has a year-round schedule of performing arts.
