St Bees Railway Station is used by the little coastal community of the same name and the surrounding villages in Cumbria. It was constructed in the mid-19th century by the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway and is officially the most westerly station in the North of the country. Today, the station and the trains that pass through on the Cumbrian Coast Line are managed by Northern and serve around 50,000 passengers annually. The achingly beautiful stone stationmaster’s house complete with old “St Bees” signage still exists along one of the platforms, though it is no longer used as the ticket office. Passengers are required to buy their tickets in advance or on board the train with the conductor. There’s an irregular hourly direct service to Carlisle in 1 hour 17 minutes and Barrow-in-furness in 1 hour 13 minutes.
The village is famous for its St. Bees Head which marks the start of a beautiful coastal walk that overlooks the glittering Irish Sea. If that’s not your thing, consider bringing your clubs for a game on the Saint Bees School Golf Course.
