Sholing railway station is used by the Southampton neighbourhood of Sholing. It was opened in the mid-19th century as a commuter stop on the line running into the city and today serves more than 110,000 passengers every year. It’s a basic, unstaffed station with no ticket office, though there are self-service machines on both platforms where you can buy tickets prior to travel. The two platforms are connected by a footbridge. As of 2018, there are no waiting shelters, though locals are campaigning to have them installed. The station and the trains that pass through are operated by South Western Railway. There’s an hourly direct service to Southampton Central in 15 minutes and an eastbound service to Portsmouth & Southsea in 47 minutes.
There are several green spaces to go walking near Sholing railway station, one of which houses the Mayfield Park Bowling Club on the grounds of what was once a 19th century stately home.
