At the relaxing end of the London, Tilbury and Southend Line is Shoeburyness station in Essex, fifty miles from London. A minute's walk from the station is East Beach, a watersports haven, but for those fancying a slower pace, an ice-cream and sit on the seawall works just as well. A few minutes' walk to the south of the station is a small cluster of shops, cafes, restaurants and pub, while a slightly longer walk to the west, around fifteen minutes, leads to the main retail and commercial district on West Road, home to cuisine from around the world.
Opened in 1884, now with houses all around it, the train station runs four trains an hour at peak time to London Fenchurch Street, with most services stopping at Basildon. Services to the capital take approximately one hour and ten minutes. A private line also runs from the station to the nearby Ministry of Defence weapons testing site, Pig's Bay.
