Shirley railway station is used by Solihull’s eastern neighbourhood of the same name. It was opened at the beginning of the 20th century along the North Warwickshire Line by Great Western Railway and was heavily invested in with a goods yard and red-brick station buildings. Today, the station and the trains that pass through are managed by West Midlands Trains and is an important commuter stop with more than 350,000 passengers using it annually. The station buildings, with their pretty overhanging roofs which provide shelter, are still in use as the ticket office which is open every day. There are two platforms connected by the original footbridge, bench seating and digital passenger information screens. There is an hourly direct service southbound to Whitlocks End in 3 minutes, while getting into the city is a breeze on the hourly direct service northbound to Birmingham Moor Street in 15 minutes.
When you disembark at Shirley, take some time to amble around Mill Lodge Park that runs alongside a section of the River Colne. Alternatively, there’s the even bigger Shirley Park and if you come at the right time, you can catch one of the matches at the Camp Hill Rugby Football Club.
