Shirebrook railway station is used by the little community of Shirebrook and the surrounding Derbyshire villages. It was opened in the second half of the 19th century by Midland Railway, though it was quickly absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. In the ‘50s is was renamed as Shirebrook West (oddly, as it is located towards the east of town) before closing in the mid ‘60s after the Beeching Axe. Three decades later, it was reopened in the late ‘90s by British Rail and is now operated by East Midlands Trains. The station’s two platforms are served by the Robin Hood Line which runs between Nottingham and Worksop. It’s an unmanned station with no ticket office, but there are self-service machines to purchase them before you board. Here, you can catch one of the hourly direct trains south to Nottingham in 47 minutes and northbound to Worksop in 22 minutes.

If you find the time you visit to Shirebrook right, you could catch a local match at the Shirebrook Town Football Club. If you’ve brought the kids, there’ll love the nearby Willow Tree Family Farm. Alternatively, consider visiting the Three Lakes Country Park, a beautiful little spot for walking.
