Shawfair railway station lies a few miles south-east of Edinburgh along the line to Tweedbank. It’s one of the newest stations in the UK having only opened in 2015 to serve the new communities of Midlothian and Shawfair. It’s not a busy station with just 22,000 passengers using it the year after it opened, but it is expected to grow in importance. The two platforms and the trains that pass through are managed by Abellio ScotRail. It’s a smart unstaffed station with self-service ticket machines, a car park out the front, a metal footbridge, waiting shelters and digital displays. Getting into the city centre is a breeze using the two direct departures an hour direct to Edinburgh (Waverley) in 15 minutes.
There are several things to do when you step off at Shawfair railway station. If you’ve brought the kids, there’ll love spotting the colourful critters at the Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World. Alternatively, bring your clubs to practise your drive at one of the nearby courses like the Kings Acre or Broomieknowe.
