Sandown railway station lies along the Island Line, the only train route through the beautiful Isle of Wight and is used by the community of Sandown and the surrounding villages. It was opened in the mid-19th century as a junction, though it changed after the closure of some of the island’s other lines in the first half of the 20th century. The station has two platforms, one of which still has the original station building and overhanging roof which provides shelter, though it is no longer used as a ticket office. There are no facilities for buying tickets, so they must either be purchased online in advance or on board the train with the guard. The station and the trains that pass through are managed and run by Island Line. There are two trains an hour direct to Ryde Pier Head in 18 minutes and two direct southbound departures an hour to Shanklin in 6 minutes.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do or see near Sandown station. If the weather’s good, you could make a beeline for the beach to stretch out on the sand or splash around in the cool English Channel. Alternatively, take the kids to see the exotic critters at the Isle of Wight Zoo just a few minutes along the coast.
