Sanderstead railway station is in the London Borough of Croydon in South London and serves the neighbourhood of Purley along with the nearby Purley Oaks station. It was opened in the late-19th century by the then London, Brighton and South Coast Railway between South Croydon and East Grinstead along the Oxted Line. Sadly, the original buildings were destroyed by a fire in the mid ‘80s though new brick buildings were constructed a year later. It sits within the Travelcard Zone 6, so Oyster cards are permitted for use on London-bound travel. There is a ticket office open during weekdays as well as self-service machines and other facilities like a footbridge connecting the two platforms and digital displays. It’s managed by Southern and serves more than a million passengers a year. There are two departures an hour direct to London Victoria in 23 minutes and southbound to East Grinstead in 35 minutes.
When you reach Sanderstead, you could make a beeline one of the several parks that dot South Croydon like South Croydon Recreation Ground or Wettern Tree Gardens. Alternatively, head a little south with your clubs to tee off at the sunny Purley Downs Golf Club.
