In Greater Manchester and a mile west of Salford's heart is the University of Salford, and Salford Crescent is the university's very own train station. It's also the nearest station for the regenerated waterfront area of MediaCityUK, where the BBC calls home and ITV films Coronation Street. Those wanting more than TV, though, will also enjoy the Lowry Outlet Mall and many other big name shops. With over a million passengers passing through a year, the station underwent a £12 million upgrade in 2012, with the ticket office now straddling University Road West, opening up the two platforms, and the accessible footbridge added to link the ticket office and platforms. The station, two miles west of the much larger Manchester Piccadilly on the Manchester to Preston Line, operates a regular service to Manchester Airport and Manchester Victoria from platform 1, and out to Blackpool, Southport and Clitheroe from platform 2.

Salford Crescent station is from the access road above University West Road or via a footpath which leads directly from the University of Salford, Frederick Road campus. A footbridge, which runs the width of the station has both lifts and steps and connects the ticket office and both platforms on the station's single island. Both recently extended platforms have canopies and seating, and there's plenty of cycle storage outside the ticket office.
