Now in Travelcard Zone 3, Northumberland Park station in north London opened in 1842 and was originally known as Marsh Lane, named after the road leading to Tottenham Marshes on which the station was built, and where Tottenham Hotspur Football Club played until 1899. The arrival of the rail to the marshland the end of nursery gardens and brought industrial development, much of which was demolished post-WW2 and replaced with the high-density residential area that remains today.
In 1968, the station expanded to incorporate London Underground's new Victoria Line and Northumberland Park became an important commuter hub and one of the main stations used by Spurs fans visiting home games. Non-football fans might find more pleasure hunting around the shops on Tottenham High Road, the area's sole pub, The Bill Nicholson - named after Tottenham's former manager - welcomes fans on match days, whether they win, lose or draw.
