Opened in 2008 as part of the revival of the 1850s Ebbw Valley Railway that closed in 1962, Newbridge station has trains chugging along the line between Cardiff Central and Ebbw Vale Parkway, with hourly services on weekdays and Saturdays, and a two-hourly service on Sundays. Trains from the single-platform station to the Welsh capital of Cardiff takes 40 minutes on Arriva Trains Wales.
A five-minute walk from the station are all the shops, restaurants and other services of Newbridge High Street. While you're there, pop in on the Workingman's Institute and Memorial Hall, which harks back to when Newbridge was an important coal-mining town, and indeed was built by the miners themselves in 1908. Today it is a community centre with a library, theatre and art-deco cinema, as well as a memorial to those who died in the world wars.
