One of two stations serving the town of New Mills, New Mills Central Railway Station sees regular Northern trains operating on the Hope Valley Line between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield. During daytime service hours, trains from New Mills Central depart half-hourly northbound to Manchester Piccadilly, but—as New Mills Central serves as a terminus for select trains between Manchester and New Mills—southbound to Sheffield only every two hours. On Saturdays, trains run hourly both north and southbound; this pattern holds on Sundays in summer and reduces to two-hourly during the winter. 

The booking office at New Mills Central Station is staffed throughout the week, Monday to Saturday, from start of service until early afternoon; at all other times, passengers wishing to travel from New Mills Central should purchase tickets on the train or in advance. Train running information is provided on digital display screens, timetable poster boards, and automated announcements. Toilet facilities are located in the booking hall, and there are waiting spaces on both platforms.  There is no step-free access suitable for unassisted wheelchair users at this station.

The approach to the station is down a steeply sloping path, then down a short ramp onto the Manchester platform. Access to the Sheffield platform is by a short path from station approach road then down 17 steps. Access between platforms by stepped footbridge.
