New Eltham station serves the suburb of the same name, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, southeast London, within Travelcard Zone 4. The station opened in the spring of 1878 and was originally known as Pope Street up until 1886. Today, the station acts as the areas' main transport hub and is served by several busy bus routes.
Trains leave the station for London Cannon Street and Charring Cross from platform 1, with trains to the latter taking approximately half an hour. From platform 2 there are trains heading east and north, to Gravesend and Woolwich Arsenal respectively.
The area around the station, particularly Footscray Road and Avery Hill Road, is home to a wide selection of restaurants, cafes and small shops - if you're looking for larger chain stores, head to Eltham High Street, about one-and-a-half miles north, and Sidcup High Street, about two miles southeast.
