Known perhaps more for its famous name than its historical intrigue, Llanfairpwll Railway Station serves the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll with regular Transport for Wales services operating on the North Wales Coast Line. Trains from Llanfairpwll operate two-hourly services between Holyhead and Chester via Llandudno and Prestatyn; typically, these trains continue to Shrewsbury and thence either Birmingham International or Cardiff Central. On Sundays, a limited service of six trains to Holyhead and seven trains to Chester operate.
Renowned for the excessively long name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The true history of the area is rather more banal, as the 58-character version was invented during the Victorian era to attract tourists to the village. In reality, Llanfairpwll Station is historic in its own right, having suffered catastrophic fires before barely escaping permanent closure on several occasions. As there are no ticketing provisions of any sort, tickets should be purchased in advance or from a guard on board the train. Waiting shelters with seating are provided on each platform, and there are timetable poster boards and digital display screens that offer train running information. Platform 2 is accessed by stairs only; platform 1 is via a rough path.
