The historic market town of Hertford dates back to the 10th century. Just 20 miles north of London, it has always been a hugely popular area to live for commuters working in the capital. When the first railway station was built in Hertford in 1843, there were seven trains to London every weekday and tickets cost the equivalent of 20p. In 1888, Hertford East opened in Mill Road, replacing the 1843 station. The covered arches of the station are a throwback to the days when horse-drawn carts would pull into the station's forecourt, now part of the Grade II listed building. Situated on the edge of the town centre the station is ideally placed. There are in excess of 200 shops in the centre and many of these are independent traders and specialist boutiques. The market still runs every Saturday and can be found throughout Maidenhead Street, Salisbury Square and Bircherley Green, with its Hertford Shopping Centre drawing visitors and locals alike.
