Hayes station is located in the London Borough of Bromley, in southeast London. The station is often referred to as Hayes (Kent), in order to avoid confusion with Hayes & Harlington. Hayes originally opened on the Mid-Kent Line in January 1857, with the station's clapboard station buildings remaining fit for purpose until 1933, when the station was modernised and shopping units where incorporated into its buildings. The station underwent further refurbishment in 1956 to repair bomb damage from World War II. There may be further redevelopments in the offing too, with the possible extension of the Bakerloo line toward Bromley set to run through the station. Much of Hayes and the surrounding area has been given over to housing, but about a mile southwest of the station you'll find Hayes Common, an 80-hectare conservation area. The main shopping area, Station Approach, contains several supermarkets, newsagents and a pub.

Station details & facilities

The main station building at Hayes is adjoined on either side by rows of shops. Despite the ticket hall's relatively large size, it contains only two staffed windows and a ticket machine. The concourse leads onto the island between platform 1 (for Charing Cross) to the left, and 2 (for Cannon Street via Lewisham) to the right. Bench seating, customer help points and bike storage can be found between the two platforms.
