Greenhithe station, also known as Greenhithe for Bluewater, serves the small village in of Greenhithe in Kent and the nearby Bluewater shopping centre. Originally built in 1849, it was once just a small-town station serving a handful of commuters - but that all changed in 1999 with the arrival of Bluewater, which saw the station rebuilt to cope with a huge spike in passenger numbers. As well as welcoming eager shoppers, Greenhithe station ferries local commuters into London, with services to Charing Cross taking around 50 minutes. Eastbound services head into Kent, terminating at the historic river port of Gravesend, or at Gillingham on the Medway estuary. The vast majority of visitors to the town are heading to Bluewater, but for those who don't wish to shop 'til they drop, Greenhithe can also offer pleasant Thames-side walks and some fine historic buildings. Particularly notable is Ingress Abbey, a grand Jacobean mansion once owned by Edward III.
