Gospel Oak is a busy commuter station in north London, offering London Overground services eastbound towards Barking and Stratford, and westbound towards Clapham Junction and Richmond. Opened in 1860, it was built on two brick arches that carry the rail line across the busy Gordon House Road, where you’ll find some local shops and pubs – there are more on the even busier Highgate Road, a five-minute walk to the east.
Gospel Oak is also the location of the southern entrance to Hampstead Heath. A 15-minute stroll through this famous green space will bring you to Parliament Hill, whose spectacular views across London are protected by law.
The Parliament Hill Lido, right outside the station, is a popular outdoor swimming pool, built in 1937. It’s open all day from May to September, and for early-morning swims in the winter months. There’s more open-air swimming available at Highgate Ponds, just east of Parliament Hill.
