Half a mile from the town centre, Gillingham station lies on the West of England Main Line from London Waterloo to Exeter. On weekdays there is usually one train per hour in either direction, with an average journey time to Waterloo of just under two hours and to Exeter of around an hour and a half. Trains to Gillingham first arrived in 1859, helping to transform a once-rural settlement five miles from Shaftesbury into a prosperous town with a wide range of new industries. From a bacon factory and brickworks to the dairy depot which sent cheese, butter and milk fresh to London several times a day, this small north-Dorset town bloomed. Nowadays, Gillingham is known for its position in the Blackmore Vale - location of the River Stour and inspiration behind some of Thomas Hardy's novels - and for hosting the Gillingham & Shaftesbury agricultural show every August.
