As its name would suggest, Exmouth stands at the mouth of the river Exe in Devon, and for much of the journey south from Exeter St David's, the railway runs alongside the eastern bank of the river with lovely views out across the water. The current Exmouth station was opened in 1981, although it was the much earlier arrival of the railway in the 19th century that transformed the town from a high-class health retreat to the seaside resort visitors find today. From the station it is a stone's throw to the start of the pedestrianised Strand which, along with the surrounding streets, is the heart of Exmouth with its many hotels, guesthouses, shops and pubs. From there, it is about a five-minute walk to the Esplanade and the beach, or to Exmouth Marina where, during the summer months, you can catch a ferry across the estuary to Starcross.
Exmouth train station is mainly served by GWR trains, which connect Paignton to Exmouth in 1h 19m and Barnstaple to Exmouth in 1h 42m.
